The Nine White Banners

Since Chinggis Khaan raised them in 1206, the Nine White Banners (Есөн хөлт цагаан туг) have stood for the Mongolian state at peace: nine standards of white horsehair, the great one at the centre guarded by eight. Nine is the sacred number, and white is the colour of peace - in war the state raised the black banner instead. Today the banners are kept in the Government Palace in Ulaanbaatar and carried out with honour to open Naadam. Manai Ger begins with them out of respect: everything sold here comes from the land and the know-how they watch over.
